Have you noticed a recent unpleasant smell in your house? It might not be dirty dishes or old trash. St. Louis is now home to the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug, and unfortunately their numbers are rising. Stink bugs are definitely an unwelcome presence, but that doesn’t mean you have to let them feel at home. The more you find out about the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug, the more you can make sure they stay out of your way.

What exactly is a “Brown Marmorated Stink Bug”?

The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug is a type of stink bug that originated in Asia but was introduced into the U.S. only a few decades ago. About a half an inch in length, it’s a little bit longer than other stink bugs. Although their body is mostly brown, they have distinctive white stripes on their antennae and around their sides.

Although stink bugs pose no harm to humans (except for maybe your sense of smell), they can cause significant damage to crops – especially that backyard garden that you’ve spent all summer cultivating.

So do they actually stink?

Not all the time. But when they’re threatened, stink bugs emit a foul odor in an attempt to ward off predators. If that odor gets in your house, it can sometimes be pretty difficult to get out.

Where will I find them?

For the most part, stink bugs reside outside. However, cool fall temperatures mean these bugs often appear inside your home, gaining access through cracks and openings around doors, windows, siding, chimneys, and window air conditioners.

How do I get rid of them?

If you find them outside, try clearing out any areas that have overgrown weeds early in the season. If stink bugs are bothering any of your plants, just pick them off by hand. Certain insecticides can also be helpful in getting rid of an infestation.

If you find them inside, start by making sure that any entry points (cracked windows, baseboards, doors, etc.) are thoroughly sealed and caulked. If the problem persists, Mick’s Exterminating can spray the appropriate insecticides both inside and outside to make sure stink bugs stay out of your space for good.

So you’re saying Mick’s can take care of them?
